SUMMER HELI-HIKING AT CMH BUGABOOS
instantly: the helicopter isn’t just transportation, it’s what unlocks the best terrain—fast. Expect your days to start high, where the views are already outrageous, then unfold with guided alpine hikes that match your pace and goals. Most days, you’ll have the chance to take multiple heli transfers to new zones (often two or three, weather and preference dependent), which means you see more variety—glaciers, meadows, ridgelines—without burning your trip on long approaches.
Back at Bugaboo Lodge, you’re staying in a true CMH original—historic, iconic, and still very comfortable. The lodge is famously set beneath the Bugaboos’ granite spires, and the amenities feel purpose-built for big mountain days: a rooftop hot tub with unreal views, steam room and sauna, massage, a full-service bar with an extensive wine cellar, chef-prepared meals and snacks (plus a pastry chef), and even an indoor climbing wall for anyone who wants to keep moving after the hike.
From the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, the logistics are straightforward. Fly into Calgary International Airport, then join the CMH ground transfer corridor (Calgary/Banff and select pick-ups) to the helipad before a short heli-flight into the lodge. CMH Mid-Atlantic keeps it easy by helping you choose the right trip length, plan flight windows and transfer timing, and dial in packing and footwear—so you arrive confident about pace, altitude, and the realities of mountain weather.
About the TerrainWHAT HIKING & TERRAIN TO EXPECT AT THE BUGS
The Bugaboos are legendary for a reason: dramatic granite towers, sweeping cirques, and glaciated basins that feel like a postcard in every direction. You’re hiking in a landscape that has drawn mountain pioneers for generations, and CMH Bugaboos puts you right into the heart of it—high and early—so the day is about exploring, not commuting.
Terrain-wise, this is “big mountain variety” at its best. One day might focus on airy ridge walks and high viewpoints; another might weave between icefields, glacial lakes, and alpine benches that are perfect for long photo stops and relaxed lunches. Because each group is guided and objectives are chosen to match ability and conditions, you can keep things mellow and scenic—or lean into longer, more ambitious days when the weather aligns.
If you want a touch of “mountaineering-lite,” CMH Bugaboos is also known for adding a via ferrata option into the week—an exciting way to experience steeper, more dramatic terrain while staying clipped-in and guided. It’s a clean step up in adrenaline without turning your trip into a technical climbing expedition.
